Archaeological Site of Delphi Greece, 1988
Famed in antiquity as the site of the Delphic Oracle, the Pythia used to sit on a three legged stool, the tripod and give her answers to questions posed by her priests on behalf of the supplicants.
They have found evidence that petroleum fumes come up from underground in the sanctum that the Pythia ruled in, thus possibly making her the first recorded gasoline sniffer in history.
I remember it being a very calm peaceful place with very few tourists. I do remember the trip out there from Athens where at one point the train stopped and the conductor manually set the switches on the track to make sure that we went to the right destination.
The only photographic record I have of my visit there is the one seen below of the little train "station" where we stopped to set the switches.
