Area de Conservación Guanacaste Costa Rica, 2004

You can sometimes be surprised by what is designated a World Heritage Site and sometimes their value is not immediately obvious.

Guanacaste would be one of those. It is one of the largest remaining areas of "dry forest", a particular kind of ecosystem, and is home to many rare plants and animals.

There is an active volcano called Rincón de la Vieja which dominates the area. The hiking is good and it's quite beautiful.
