cambodia - 2005

Unfortunately I'm amongst that large group of tourists that visit Cambodia only to see one thing: the temples at Angkor, Angkor Wat being the most famous (but in my mind not necessarily the most beautiful).

Siem Reap is the town closest to the temple sites and is a pretty extreme example of exploitation tourism: many five star foreign chains sit across a dirty and polluted river from some very poor and destitute people. It doesn't speak well to the priorities of the government or the future of the country.

Angkor itself is impressive and well worth the visit, though try to go in the off season since the high season is a nightmare.
